The lyrics to “Goodbye, Yellow Brick Road” are an interesting case where many who enjoy the song — including those who designed its album art — misunderstand it. After all, that album art in question showcases a caricature of Elton John himself stepping out of a real alleyway and into a clearly-based-on-Oz world of make-believe. The lyrics themselves, however, tell an opposite story, and a close listen to the words proves the song to be about rejecting postmodernity and its frilly cages, not joining it.
