Tom’s Diner

by Suzanne Vega (1984)

As an a capella, “Tom’s Diner” is all the easier perceived as poetry, and its lyrics tell the slice-of-life, stream-of-consciousness-like story of a man’s few minutes sitting at a diner, yearning longingly for the women about him, and finally losing himself to full reflection upon the sound of church bells, just before leaving the place in a hurry.
