She’s Leaving Home

by the Beatles (1967)

The lyrics to “She’s Leaving Home” tell the story of a young woman’s running away from home, but what is most notable about them — beside their high quality — is the extreme sympathy shown for the parents of the runaway. Coming as it is from the Beatles, who are so responsible for the generation they were a part of, this sympathy is all the more striking, and it is interesting to think that those who followed in the social wake of the band did away with this sort of empathy for the enemy. This bit of the song, in short, showcases a quirk of the universe, which is that both the leaders and followers of movements tend to be more extreme than the originators.
