Renegade

by Styx (1978)

The quality to be found in Styx’s “Renegade” comes from the fact that the song is an allegory on manhood in general, which has been under a clear and obvious general assault going back to — at least — 1978. The lyrics tell the story of a wanted man who is being run down by the law, but their quality comes from the fact that they refer to manhood in general being hunted to near extinction in the second half of the twentieth century. With this interpretation in mind, the chorus of the song takes on a much deeper meaning:

The jig is up, the news is out,
They finally found me,
The renegade, who had it made,
Retrieved for a bounty;
Nevermore to go astray,
This’ll be the end, today, of the wanted man
