Lola

by the Kinks (1970)

The Kinks “Lola” is a particularly worthwhile song to investigate lyrically because it is a supreme example of a case where the double meaning is the meaning. Each word of the song’s lyrics can be gone through, and one will find that there exist two equal but opposite meanings: It is about a woman the narrator meets who acts in a way that makes her seem a man, or it is about a woman the narrator meets who is actually a man. Lyrically, each interpretation is valid, and the quality of each is made all the higher by the presence of the other.
