Baby, You’re a Rich Man

by the Beatles (1967)

“Baby, You’re a Rich Man” is a lesser known Beatles song, and it is, like “A Day in the Life,” the result of mashing together two initially independent pieces, one each from Lennon and McCarthy. Each half of the song deals with the silliness involved in everyday behavior, with one half mocking the tendency to elevate some people above others — what did you see when you were there? / Nothing that doesn’t show — while the other half mocks the various and fanciful safeguards that are taken with pieces of paper, thoroughly inked as they may be.
