It is not difficult to see why The Call of the Wild is and has been London’s most read book, and it is not difficult to see why it will remain so for the foreseeable future —White Fang and Sea Wolf, for all their quality, are necessarily put aside. It is the quintessential modern allegory, and no more need be said than that Buck, the Southland dog who is made to go wild, is clearly written to be man just as much as beast.
